A Single Man

Watched Tom Ford's A Single Man last night and woke up still thinking about it. The story is absolutely beautiful and tragic and the styling of the entire film was stunning. Can Tom Ford style my life? The tailored suits, the old Mercedes, George's thick black frames...why don't men dress like that anymore?

The main character had the most inspirational house. Set in LA/Santa Monica, I wonder where this house is located...and can I move in?

10 Impossible Things

Inspired by the brilliant Alice and Wonderland movie (Tim Burton), here's my list of 10 impossible things.

1. Neko has an English accent
2. I can blink my eyes and be anywhere in the world
3. Homemade mac n' cheese is packed with vitamins
4. Every time a girl is on her "time of the month", her hair sprouts beautiful fragrant flowers instead of...what actually happens. *Sorry if that was graphic, I didn't mean it!
5. When watching the food network channel, you can pull the dish right out of the screen for a taster!
6. Each time a song is played, it sounds like hearing the band live
7. The ocean is always at the most perfect swimming temperature
8. I have Matilda-esque powers and can move things by just thinking it
9. Jason Mraz and I are dating (haha)
10. Sleep is optional

The Swell Season

I can't stop listening to the Swell Season (especially this song, from their latest album Strict Joy).  I know I seem to say this about every show I've gone to lately, but this is for real.  I thought I liked the Swell Season after seeing Once a couple years ago, but after seeing them live..."like" is not even close to how much I appreciate their music, showmanship, and overall sincerity.  The duo performed with Glen Hansard's band The Frames, and I thought it was sweet that they thought to share the limelight (Glen had been the lead singer/guitarist of The Frames for nearly 20 years afterall!).  The entire night included some unexpected comedy (Jason Segal showed up and shared a song for everyone...that's LA for you!), a heart-felt Czech folk song sung by Marketa and a family friend, a beautiful Irish folk tune on the violin and even words for the wise from Glen Hansard himself.  
All that aside, the music was literally jaw dropping (you can ask Blair and Jackie...I kept having to lift my jaw).  No words or even Youtube videos can explain.  They're embarking on a new world-wide tour with Josh Ritter and if you have the chance, please go support them. 

Wild Things

When the trailer for Where the Wild Things are came out in the beginning of this year, I got so excited for October 2009 to roll around.  Arcade Fire's "Wake Up", Max's wolf outfit, the wild rompus...all factors that had me in a tizzy* for this story to finally come alive on the big screen.

Finally, October.  We went the Friday after opening night.  I liked it.  I even shelled over the big bucks to get a big bag of popcorn and a blue slushy drink to commemorate the experience.  The dialogue was cute, simple and the entire movie set was absolutely fantastical (that nest/fort?!)  As the previews suggested, Spike Jonze created a beautiful world where you could lose yourself for an hour or two.  Furthermore, he gave each of the Wild Things recognizable personalities, even names - if I were to go through my friends, I could definitely tell you which one was Ira, which was Alexander etc.  I liked it.

But, I can't lie that I was a little disappointed when it ended.  Maybe the people who put together the trailer were just too good at their job and my expectations were really high.  I was perusing through Paste's website and found this article --- Paste editor, Josh Jackson hit everything I was thinking right on the nose.  Read it here:  "It could have used some Arcade Fire"

*note - new phrase I'm trying to incorporate in everyday use.  In addition to "shut the f--ront door".
