On Repeat: Rhye

Oh my, I can't seem to stop listening to Rhye - Woman

This band seems so secretive. Although the lead's voice sounds a lot like Sade - spoiler alert! - it's actually a man. I did a quick search for a photo since I wanted to have some sort of visual of the man behind the voice...but there doesn't seem to be any! In an age of over-the-top celebrity appearances, I can respect that they don't want their "look" to interfere with their music. Their recent feature on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic continues to peak my curiosity but I guess I will continue to wonder because I will be out of town when they return to LA's El Rey Theatre on May 10th. Somebody do me (and yourself!) a favor...buy a ticket and snap a photo, ok?!

Hear the entire MBE/KCRW session here! // Another cool article on NPR if you care for more.

Holga Adventures

Holy moly, what a great start to 2012. It feels like summer in LA and I don't mind! Not one bit. For my day off, I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went for a little jaunt around Runyan Canyon with Jackie. It was especially busy - it felt like we were hiking in an amusement park! I don't know if the three day weekend, the weather or new years resolutions are to blame. Probably a combination of the three.

We brought along my trusty camera and experimented with the Holga lens, as you can see. After some indoor experimenting, I decided that the Holga lens was much more appropriate for outdoor settings and I love the vignette effect that I got on a lot of these shots. I kept thinking that it was funny to use a plastic toy lens on such a nice digital SLR. Don't these remind you of those disposable camera shots that you would get developed from summer camp?

Sidenote: I didn't take a photo of it, but the Kale and Coconut smoothie from Naturewell in Silverlake is definitely worth mentioning. There is nothing better after a dusty LA hike! Go brave the hipsters and get one, if you are in the neighborhood.

Color Correcting

My favorite program in Adobe's Creative Suite used to be Illustrator. Call me a nerd, but I like to work with vectors and "draw"! For the longest time, I've used Photoshop for the basics and I'm just now starting to explore some of the more hidden tools. There are a ton of really great Photoshop tutorials on Pinterest. I also follow photography blogs that often offer many great tips and tricks (who needs to pay for school?!) but as they say, practice makes perfect. Thank goodness I have a ton of photos to edit.

I'm still working on finding my "style", but here are a few before and afters from my trip to Asia. It's fun to go through these memories...apparently the fondest ones all involve food!

A memorable meal in Bangkok. This photo has me craving lemongrass and coconut. *Yay! I took the weird shadow off her cheekscolor-correct
One of my favorite things about Bangkok: Street food. Delicious sticky rice in a bag? Say no more. *I think I need to lower the contrast on this one.jackie_laksa_colorcorrect
Our Laksa adventure in Singapore was so worth the trip across town. Every time Jackie or Blair cooks with the Laksa sauce, I'm taken back to this little outdoor spot. *It was difficult to balance out the shadow across her face and have her eyes "pop"...

oxfords

Ayayaye these are better than what I expected! Thanks for the Christmas present, Alex...I'm a little in love. I've been looking for a good pair of brown leather oxfords and a good excuse to take pictures of the new linen skirt I made...took care of two birds with one stone with these bad boys.  The best thing? Leather shoes that didn't need to be broken in...for under $80! Who knew that existed?!

Highly recommend them - get 'em while you can!

Girl on the Go

Another one from Josh Goleman that I couldn't resist posting - this girl is in heels, a dress, coffee in one hand and her sewing machine in the other. At least she has the necessities! A smile next? Maybe that comes after she finishes the coffee.

I think I'm addicted to Google Reader. Any other Reader fans out there? These days, it's so easy to peruse blogs, add subscriptions and then pile up on "news". My latest thing is subscribing to blogs of photographers. I recently re-discovered Josh Goleman, a photographer based out of New Jersey. Seems like he specializes in snapshots of NYC and live music. He has a knack for black & white and capturing people at their best, worst and everything in-between.

Never Would I Ever

...think of pairing these duck heels with this outfit, but her confident smile just pulls the whole thing together.

...bike to work in this outfit! She's joking right? Love her shades.

...wear my sweater backwards. I do like back-button down stuff though. Nice try, Paul Smith!

...smoke a cig. Although, I might just hold one if it made me look this cool.
